The Grange Motel
Welcome to The Grange Motel Situated at 56 Armagh Street, Central Christchurch, we offer 8 Self Contained Motel Units at the rear of the main Guesthouse . To the rear of The Grange homestead, Christchurch, arranged around a private courtyard, The Grange Motel accommodation provides eight fully self-contained studio and executive studios, including one access and twin unit . Modern and stylish, these units provide you with everything you will need to enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable stay . Breakfast is not included in the room rate; however, our Motel guests are welcome to dine with us in the Guesthouse kitchen, choosing from a delicious range of gourmet breakfast options a la carte . Built entirely of the strong native timbers Kauri and Totara, The Grange is a Heritage Grade II-listed Victorian mansion originally constructed in 1874 for Rev . James West Stack, a missionary, clergyman, writer and interpreter . This beautifully preserved historic homestead was sold in 1905 to a Dr . William Irving and upon his departure to England in 1934, Dr . Francis Bennett moved in . For 4 generations Bennetts were born and raised here . Dr . Bennett was a GP and most famously examined patient Pauline Parker; one of the 2 girls involved in the infamous 'Parker/Hulme' murder case . This was later made into a motion picture by New Zealand's own Peter Jackson, called 'Heavenly Creatures', starring Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey . Some of the filming was completed in Dr . Bennett's then surgery at The Grange, which has since been converted into the owner's private residence . Des & Tracey Ramsay have owned the homestead for over 10 years now and since taking ownership, have added the modern, spacious Motel Unit accommodation at the rear of the Guesthouse, keeping in style and taste with the original features offered by the grand, street facing mansion . Over the last few years, The Grange has been exceptionally fortunate to come through the earthquakes unscathed, with only some minor cosmetic damage to the homestead and no damage to the Motel Units . We are fully operational and look forward to having you stay with us here in the heart of Christchurch City . Whether it is your last night in New Zealand, or the first day of your Kiwi adventure, we look forward to welcoming you to The Grange and assisting in any way to make your stay as comfortable and relaxing as possible .
